Frequently Asked Questions

How Old are the Hens:
Typically Hens are about 18 Months Old when Slaughtered - Having been Laying Eggs for only 12 Months. Because they will not lay 1 egg per day after this - they are replaced.

Will Rescue Hens Still Lay Eggs:
Yes - and for several more Years normally. Hens Will lay eggs for anything up to 5 - 7 years - with eggs becoming larger in size, but less frequently laid. Typically, once a rescue Hen is settled in, you can expect 4 - 5 eggs per week to be Laid.

What do i need to Feed them ?
When you first get the rescue Hens home - they need Layers Mash, Dry, for the first week. We have small Handy sized bags of a Special Blend Layers Mash available on the collection day - so you wont need to buy anything else.

After that first week - introduce them to normal Layers Pellets and Mixed Corn, plus all of your vegetable scraps, leftover Rice and Pasta, cabbage Leaves etc etc - all of which they will love.

How Much does a Hen Cost ?
We ask for a minimum Donation of £1 per Hen - (although donations of £3-£4 per bird is on average given) This is to help cover costs of Trailers, Poultry Crates, Purchasing the Hens from Farmers (No we dont get them free... ) and all asssociated running costs to save the hens from Slaughter. Certainly a lot cheaper than buying a point of Lay Hen - and you save a life too !
